ChinaAid President Bob Fu to Speak to CECC Regarding Persecution of Human Rights Attorneys

ChinaAid President Bob Fu to Speak to CECC Regarding Persecution of Human Rights Attorneys

WASHINGTON, July 6 /Christian Newswire/ -- On July 10, ChinaAid president Bob Fu will speak on a panel during a roundtable hosted by the Congressional-Executive Commission on China (CECC). Bob Fu will discuss the grievous situation which has developed in the past few weeks, in which more than 18 lawyers who have been active in representing sensitive human rights cases have not been able to renew their law licenses, and at least three law firms have not been allowed to pass inspection. Some lawyers have even been recently arrested, beaten and tortured for practicing normal legal defense work. Bob Fu will also discuss the case of kidnapped Christian human rights attorney Gao Zhisheng who has been missing since February 4, 2009. Gao, along with many of the other attorneys targeted by the government, have been working with ChinaAid's legal defense efforts for religious freedom cases.

The roundtable, entitled "China's Human Rights Lawyers: Current Challenges and Prospects" will be held on Friday, July 10 from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. in the Dirksen Senate Office Building, Room 628. A panel of experts will discuss. The panel will focus on China's human rights lawyers and their role in advancing the rule of law in China, the relationship between these lawyers and the Chinese government and the Communist Party and why Chinese authorities recently refused to renew or revoked lawyers' licenses.
